Teatro Comunale di Modena

Teatro Comunale “Luciano Pavarotti” of Modena

Teatro Comunale “Luciano Pavarotti” of Modena is located in the heart of Emilia Romagna, the Region famous for its opera tradition, who gave births to Giuseppe Verdi and opera stars such as Arturo Toscanini, Renata Tebaldi, Carlo Bergonzi, Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti. The Theatre runs three major seasons of Opera, Classical music and Dance plus a cross over festival, l’Altro Suono, outreach projects, a full program for schools and children and a Military Tattoo festival during the summer. Its opera season is ranked among the best of Italy.
In the year 1838, marquis Ippolito Livizzani, who was mayor of Modena, convoked the high officials of the Illustrissima Comunità to decide on the construction of a new theatre, to replace the former concert-hall in the Via Emilia (1643-1859), which was decrepit in its structure although rich of artistic glory. Francesco Vandelli, court-architect of Francesco IV of the Este family, was chosen to make the designs. The new theatre, the present Teatro Comunale of Modena, opened three years later on the evening of October 2 nd 1841.
A theatre, as written in those days, built "to give splendour to the city and to transmit scenic art". Built on a surface of 2300 square metres, it is easy to understand that the total costs of the Teatro dell'Illustrissima Comunità, as it was called in those days, rose to 722,000 Italian lires (about 400 euros). A burden that soon resulted to be not so heavy thanks to the selling of boxes to private citizens, the selling of the material which was gained out of the pulling down of the former buildings and, last but not least, thanks to a substantial gift of the prince, who then reigned over Modena. The rest of the amount was paid by the Illustrissima Comunità.
