The Petruzzelli Theatre

The Petruzzelli Theatre is a key part of the artistic, social and cultural history of the city of Bari. In the middle of the night between 26 and 27 October 1991, after the last performance of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma, the building was destroyed by arson. Wholesale reconstruction, in compliance with government insistence on the principle of “where it was, how it was”, began in the second half of 2006 and was completed in 2008. Recreating the original character of the theatre in line with the clear brief established by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities involved both the redevelopment of what had survived and the reproduction, with the addition of the necessary technological innovations, of what had been destroyed.
The original plans for the building were drawn up in 1887 by the engineer Cicciomessere, but it was only in 1897 that the first stone was laid. The Theatre was opened on 14 February 1903 with a performance of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots.
The Petruzzelli is a cross between an Italian-style and a French-style theatre, the latter being the inspiration for its galleries, semi-spherical dome and spaciousness. Once able to hold 3,200 spectators, in order to comply with safety regulations its capacity is now 1,480. After eighteen years the Theatre, which is currently run by the Fondazione Lirico Sinfonica Petruzzelli e Teatri di Bari reopened to the public in October 2009 with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
